For a first trip to Tanzania, I usually recommend 9 to 12 days in total: 5 to 7 days on safari and 4 to 5 days in Zanzibar. That gives you time to experience the wildlife properly without turning your holiday into a race between airports, parks and hotels.
I plan these trips from Arusha, and the length of the trip is rarely the real problem. The real problem is how people try to fill it. Here is how I think about it.
The split I recommend for first-timers
- Safari: 5 to 7 days
- Zanzibar: 4 to 5 days
- Total: around 9 to 12 days
If you have more time, add it to the places you are already visiting before you add new ones.
Fewer parks, more time in each
I would much rather take you to two or three parks and give you real time in each than squeeze five parks into five days. Tanzania is far bigger than it looks on a map, and moving between parks takes time. Every transfer is time you could have spent on a game drive.
A strong first route: Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti
For most first-time travellers, those three give you different landscapes and different wildlife experiences, without the constant packing and unpacking that wears people out.
Why Zanzibar is part of the experience
A safari means early mornings, long game drives and a lot of time in a vehicle. Zanzibar is the change of pace. A few days on the coast to slow down, swim, explore Stone Town or simply do nothing is not an add-on. It is part of what makes the whole trip feel complete.
The most common itinerary mistake: trying to do too much
The mistake I see most often when people plan their own itinerary is trying to fit everything in. They look at Tanzania's famous parks on a map and think: I'm already here, so why not add one more? Suddenly a seven-day safari has four or five parks in it.
It looks impressive on paper. In reality, the traveller spends much of their holiday sitting in a vehicle, or checking in and out of lodges.
Underestimating Tanzania's geography
Two places can look close on a map and still take much longer to reach than you expect, because of the roads and the park conditions. Plan around travel time, not distance.
Assuming there is one perfect order
The order of your trip matters, but there is no single right answer. We look at the route, where each park sits, your flight connections and what matters most to you before we decide the sequence. The best order depends on the season, where you arrive, what you want to see and whether Zanzibar is part of the trip.
Custom itinerary or a set safari package?
A lot of travellers assume a fully custom safari must be better than a set package. Honestly, I don't agree.
Customising makes a lot of sense when you have specific priorities, such as:
- A particular budget
- Certain parks you want to see
- Travelling with children
- Photography-focused game drives
- Dietary requirements
- More time in one place
- Fixed travel dates
But customisation for the sake of customisation doesn't automatically create a better safari. A good set itinerary has already been designed around the realities of Tanzania: driving distances, park locations, accommodation, game-drive time and logistics. You get a proven route without having to make twenty different decisions yourself.
The mistake is thinking that more choices automatically mean a better trip. My advice is simple: start with a good structure, then customise only where it actually adds value.
Where I would start a first-timer
For a first-time visitor, I would point you to our Classic Tanzania Safari. It gives you a balanced introduction to Tanzania's wildlife and landscapes while keeping the route practical. From there, you can upgrade the accommodation, extend your time in the Serengeti, add Zanzibar or adjust the route once we understand what you really want.
If you tell us you want more time in the Serengeti, or that you care more about photography than about seeing as many parks as possible, that is when we start changing the itinerary.
The question to ask yourself
Don't ask: how many places can I fit into my holiday? Ask: how much time do I actually want to spend experiencing each place?
That is usually the difference between a trip that looks good on an itinerary and one that actually feels good when you are there. A good safari isn't the one with the most customisation. It is the one where the route, the pace, the budget and the experience all make sense for the person travelling.
Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for a safari and Zanzibar?
It can work, but you will need to cut back on parks or beach days. If you only have a week, choose fewer places rather than rushing through more.
How many parks should I visit on my first safari?
Two or three is usually right. Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti make a strong first combination.
Should I do the safari or Zanzibar first?
It depends on the season, your flights, where you arrive and what matters most to you. A good operator will work out the order with you rather than apply one rule to everyone.
Is a custom safari better than a package?
Only when you have specific priorities. For most first-timers, a proven itinerary adjusted to your needs works better than building everything from scratch.
