Book through a good travel agent at home if your trip is complicated, if it is your first big international journey, or if you want one company handling your flights, insurance and safari together. Book directly with a local operator if you want to deal with the people who actually run your safari on the ground.

I run a local safari company in Arusha, and I still won't tell you that travel agents are a bad idea. Here is my honest answer to a question I get asked a lot.

When a travel agent back home is the better choice

A good travel agent can make the whole process much easier, especially if:

  • You are booking a complicated international trip for the first time.
  • You want one company to handle flights, accommodation, insurance and the safari together.
  • You prefer someone you can meet and speak to face to face in your own country.
  • You want an independent travel professional guiding you through every booking decision.

What you give up when you book through an agent

The trade-off is that there is usually another layer between you and the company actually operating your safari in Tanzania. That can mean slower, less direct communication with the people running your trip. It can also mean a higher overall price, because the agent needs to earn a commission on top of the local operator's rate.

When booking directly with a local operator makes more sense

Booking directly makes the most sense if you want a direct relationship with the company on the ground. You speak to the safari team itself. You discuss the itinerary with people who operate in Tanzania every day. And when you want to change something, it doesn't have to pass through another company first.

There is also a practical advantage. We are here. We know the destinations, the roads, the parks, the camps and the logistics, because we operate them directly.

When the plan had to change: a real example

One client, Maurizio, booked his Tanzania safari directly with us. His original plan was a Serengeti migration safari, but as the trip got closer, the logistics needed to change.

Rather than simply sticking to an itinerary that no longer worked, we worked through the practical details from here in Tanzania: the transport arrangements, the accommodation and the park logistics. Then we restructured the trip around what was actually possible on the ground.

That is the real advantage of booking with the operator. When something needs to change, the person you are speaking to isn't sitting thousands of kilometres away, waiting for information from another company. We know the local suppliers, the roads, the parks and the operational realities, so we can solve the problem directly.

For Maurizio, the important thing wasn't having someone sell him a safari. It was having the company that runs the safari involved in the planning and able to respond when the original arrangements had to change. It reminded us of something we believe at Viaggio: a safari is not just a product you buy. It is a trip that has to be operated properly.

Why we see travel agents as partners, not competitors

There is value in both routes. When a traveller books directly with Viaggio, they get a direct line to the local operator. When an agent books with us for their client, the agent gets that same local support behind them.

That is why we work with travel agents, and why we are actively looking for long-term partnerships with reputable agents and tour companies overseas.

How working with Viaggio works for agents

The model is simple. The agent brings the client, and Viaggio handles the Tanzania operation. We can work on a net-rate or commissionable basis, depending on the partnership. The agent keeps the client relationship and earns their margin, while we take care of the local side:

  • Itinerary planning
  • Accommodation coordination
  • Park permits
  • Safari vehicles
  • Professional guides
  • Airport transfers
  • On-the-ground support

What a good agent partnership looks like to us

A good agent relationship should be a partnership, not just a transaction. We want our agents to have clear pricing, fast communication and accurate information, and the confidence that their clients will be properly looked after once they land in Tanzania.

We are open to working with agents in different markets, including agents who are new to Tanzania and want a reliable local partner to help them develop and sell Tanzania itineraries. We are looking for long-term partners, not one-off bookings.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to book a safari directly with a local operator?

Often, because there is no agent commission added on top. But a good agent can still be worth it if they save you time and stress on a complicated trip.

Is it safe to book directly with a Tanzanian safari company?

Yes, as long as you verify the company first. Check its tourism licence, make sure you pay into an account in the company's registered name, and get everything in writing before you pay a deposit.

Do local safari operators work with travel agents?

Many do, including us. Agents can work with Viaggio on a net-rate or commissionable basis while we run the trip in Tanzania.
